Bunratty is a small village in County Clare near the County Limerick border. The village itself is located of the Ralty River with the centre point of the village being the superb Bunratty Castle. Within the castle’s own folk park there are many magnificent buildings including the Ardcronney Church.

Nearby is the town of Shannon and Limerick city. Shannon has its own airport and is known for being the aviation capital of this part of Ireland while Limerick is the host city of the province rugby team, Munster. You’ll also find a great choice of shops in the city.

And there are great opportunities to watch or play sport: from rugby in Limerick and golf in Shannon to swimming at the Shannon leisure centre.

The area also has good links to the rest of Ireland with the M18 passing by the village and the M20 and M7 close by in Limerick.

 

Things to do in Bunratty

A Day Out at Bunratty Castle

The main attraction in the village of Bunratty is the Bunratty castle, which sits upon the banks of the Ralty River. The castle is also the main focus point of the folk park that sits behind it.

Simply visit the castle and folk park to sample life in the past in Ireland. The castle opens up to the public most days and in the evenings special buffet events are held giving a chance to image life as a King in Ireland!

In the park you’ll stunning buildings with an immersive look at how some parts, including a bar and Post Office, would have looked in historic Ireland.

Explore Aviation at Shannon

You can also take a visit to the nearby town Shannon. The town is very popular with aviation experts and hobbyists and it even has its own large airport.

This is celebrated in town with the Atlantic Air Adventures, a volunteer-run attraction where you’ll even find an incredible flight simulator available to enjoy!

Perfect for Golf

The town of Shannon boasts a well-established golf club with a proud history, clubhouse facilities and an on-site restaurant. The course itself is an 18 hole course, designed by John D Harris, with a mixed range of hazards including water hazards, bunkers, roughs and trees.

Munster Rugby in Limerick

If you’re a rugby fan, you’ll find Bunratty to be a treat as Munster Rugby’s home of Limerick city is close by.

A top flight club in Ireland and in Europe’s Pro 12 league, a chance to see Munster Rugby play is a highly recommended ‘to do’ if you have the chance.

Shannon for Swimming

You’ll find a large leisure centre in Shannon, complete with a 25 meter pool as well as astro pitches, basketball courts, a gym, climbing wall and sports halls.

Food and Drink in Bunratty

Around the village there are a number of restaurants and bars in which you can enjoy a nice relaxing lunch or dinner. Many of these restaurants are located along the main street of the village.

One of the best restaurant is in the village is Durty Nelly’s. At the restaurant you can dine for special occasions and host weddings and other special occasions.

Durty Nelly’s have a number of different restaurants including an oyster restaurant, a loft restaurant and also offer outdoor dining and a BBQ.

The oyster restaurant specialises in seafood such as crab, prawns, mussels and of course muscles. In the bar you can get great pub grub, with many of the food items being prepared from scratch in the kitchen including the soup of the day, sandwiches and the main courses.

Highly recommended.

Nearby, for pub grub and an a la carte menu daily, look out for a homely bar called The Creamery Bar.  You can expect to find a range of fish, meat and vegetarian dishes.
