Part of the Ring of Kerry and a real hidden gem, Valentia Island is found off County Kerry in Southwest Ireland. To get to the island, simply travel by land through the town of Portmagee or by boat into Knightstown Harbour near Reenard town.

The main island town is Knightstown, where you’ll find the main bars and restaurants although there a few places dotted around the island including an ice cream parlour and The Ring Lyne bar/ restaurant.

The best way to get around the island is by car as from every part of the island you will find spectacular views especially from Bray head the most western part of the island and the Geokaun mountain and Fogher Cliffs to the north of the island.

 

Things to do on Valentia Island

Hiking and Trails

The entire island offers incredible views, meaning it is perfect for walking.

Around the island there are multiple different walking trails, including the Bray Head Loop Walk. This walk will take you to the most western part of the island and too multiple different sets of cliffs. From this position you can see the mainland Ireland and Portmagee.

More great hiking trails include walks to the Geokaun mountains and cliffs. One you get to the top of the cliffs, you have a stunning 360 degrees view of Ireland, the island itself and the North Atlantic.

The Skellig Experience

One of the most known attractions on the island is The Skellig Experience visitors centre, located at the bridge to Portmagee.

This attraction is a a real signature of Valentia Island and offers many different exhibitions including an underwater experience.

One of the best exhibitions within the centre is the monastery exhibition. This tells the story of a group of men who settled on the island of Skellig Michael, the larger of the two Skellig islands, to find religion and solitude. The sea birds and sea life exhibition is great for younger families and kids.

All the other exhibitions are very informative about the island. including the lighthouse, underwater and film exhibitions. Within the film exhibition, you’re able to learn about the islands through video.

Ring of Kerry

Stopping at the island should be an essential during your Ring of Kerry tour as you’ll have a chance to see the likes of the island lighthouse.

It is said that the view from the island is great no matter what the Irish weather is doing, and even those who enjoy seeing the extremes of weather might enjoy relaxing to watch a storm brewing!

There’s also the opportunity to see much of the beautiful wildlife in the area and if you’re lucky enough, you might even see some dolphins or a seal.

Food and Drink on Valentia Island

You’ll find a choice of restaurants around the Island of Valentia, many located in the main town of the island.

One of the main and best places for food on the island is the Royal Valentia, where you can enjoy the likes of a surf and turf meal or their Gourmet Cajun Lamb Burger.

Another great restaurant on the island called Bostons makes for a great spot for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
